Shamrockin Good Time – here’s to the most magical St. Patrick’s Day bash
Top o' the mornin' to ya! Or, if it’s later in the day—top o' the pint to ya! Welcome, lads and lassies, to the ultimate guide for hosting the most magical St. Patrick’s Day bash this side of the rainbow. It’s time to don your greenest greens, jig your way to the kitchen, and let your inner leprechaun shine.
Why, you ask, do we go all out for St. Paddy’s Day? Well, it’s all thanks to our Kitchen Switchen mom’s Irish roots. If you catch her standing in the sun just right, you might spy a glimmer of red in her hair—a sign she’s got the luck of the Irish running through her veins. Last year, she finally made her way to Chicago to see the legendary green rivers, and let me tell ya, it was pure magic! If you’re lookin’ for an authentic St. Paddy’s Day, Chicago is a pot o' gold worth chasing.
But enough o' me blatherin'. Let’s get crackin' on how to host a St. Patrick’s Day party that’ll make even the grumpiest banshee crack a smile.
Step 1: Deck the Halls with Shamrocks and Shenanigans
No St. Paddy’s party is complete without decorations. Raid your thrift store or even your local horse tackle store for some lucky horseshoes to make your table even more unique. Include green streamers, shamrock garlands, and golden chocolate coins for the kids. Scatter ‘em across your table for a bit o’ sparkle—leprechauns love shiny things, after all. Don’t forget a festive playlist! The sound o' fiddles and tin whistles will have your guests Irish dancing in no time.
And hey, when you’re setting the table, swing by Kitchen Switchen for all your party needs. We’ve got stock pots big enough to feed an army of leprechauns, serving trays to hold your corned beef, and beer mugs to toast the Emerald Isle in style.
Step 2: Feed Your Guests Like Kings (or Leprechauns)
What’s a party without a feast? Here are two traditional Irish recipes to get your guests grinnin' like they’ve found the end o’ the rainbow.
Recipe #1: Corned Beef and Cabbage
Ah, the classic! It’s hearty, it’s comforting, and it’s as Irish as a pot o’ gold.
Ingredients:
- 4 pounds corned beef brisket
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon peppercorns
- 1 onion, quartered
- 6 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1 small cabbage, cut into wedges
- 5-6 potatoes, peeled and halved
Instructions:
- Place the corned beef in a large stock pot (grab yours from Kitchen Switchen, of course!) and cover with water. Add the bay leaves, peppercorns, and onion.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 3 hours.
- Add the carrots and potatoes and cook for another 30 minutes.
- Toss in the cabbage and simmer for 15-20 minutes until tender.
- Slice the corned beef against the grain and serve with a dollop of mustard. Sláinte!
Recipe #2: Irish Soda Bread
You can’t have an Irish feast without soda bread. It’s simple, it’s rustic, and it’ll soak up all that delicious gravy.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the buttermilk until it forms a dough.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly. Shape it into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
- Cut a cross into the top of the loaf (to let the fairies out—they don’t like being trapped in bread).
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with butter. Heaven!
Step 3: Raise a Toast (or Two, or Three) & Don’t Forget the Sweet Treats
No St. Patrick’s Day party is complete without a proper toast. Fill your mugs with Guinness, Irish whiskey, or a green beer if you’re feeling festive. Then, gather your guests and proclaim:
*"May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door!"
Now that’s a toast worthy of the Emerald Isle. Keeping things family friend this year. Stop by Kitchen Switchen celebrate after dinner with some cupcakes in place of that Guinness.
Step 4: Games and Giggles
Keep the shenanigans going with some fun activities. Try your hand at a limerick contest (bonus points for rhyming with “leprechaun”), a St. Paddy’s scavenger hunt, or a jig-off to see who can dance the longest. And if you’re feelin' competitive, challenge your guests to a round o’ trivia about Irish culture.
Why We Love St. Paddy’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is more than just a celebration of shamrocks and green rivers. For us, it’s a chance to honor our family’s Irish heritage. Last year’s trip to Chicago to see the green rivers was the cherry on top—a memory we’ll treasure forever. If you’ve never been, make it a bucket list trip. The city knows how to do St. Paddy’s Day right!
